Begin your tour to Tunisia’s Berber villages with a visit to the monumental El Jem amphitheater, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Roman monument in Africa. Continue to Matmata, known for its underground troglodyte dwellings. After lunch at the Sidi Driss Hotel, featured in Star Wars, visit local families to experience Berber hospitality. In the late afternoon, head to Tataouine, an ancient Berber village nestled in the mountains, where you’ll settle in for dinner and an overnight stay in a traditional setting.
After breakfast, visit Douiret and then drive to Chenini, a hilltop village overlooked by a ksar, or fortified granary. Explore Chenini’s mosque of the Seven Sleepers and its remarkable architecture. Continue to Toujane for a hosted lunch at a Berber family’s home, followed by a visit to the village.
